seamless steel pipe Ultimate Guide

seamless steel pipe price

The cost of steel raw materials can have a significant impact on the price of seamless steel tubes. As well, the complexity of seamless steel pipe when it is manufactured can also affect the price. Larger diameter or thicker walled tubes require more raw material, which may increase your costs. You can contact us directly to give you the latest price quotes

Seamless steel pipe manufacturing process

The production process of seamless steel pipe is divided into the following steps: round pipe billet → heating → perforation → three-roll slant rolling, continuous rolling or extrusion → deburring → sizing (or reducing) → cooling → straightening → hydrostatic test (or flaw detection) → marking → storage. Seamless steel pipe is made from ingots or solid billets that are perforated into a burr tube and then hot rolled, cold rolled or cold drawn. The final step is to cut the pipe to the required length and then finish it by removing any burrs or rough edges. The finished tubes are then inspected for defects and tested for quality before being shipped to the customer.

What is the difference between seamless and seamed pipe?

1, the processing process is different. Seamless steel pipe is made of high-quality carbon steel or alloy steel. The processing of seamless steel pipes are cold-drawn and hot-rolled method, while seamed pipes are generally welded.

2, different uses. Seamless steel pipe is mainly used as a pipeline or structural components for the transport of fluids, mainly for the mechanical industry. Seamless steel pipe is mainly used in the construction industry for fluid and gas transportation, such as water, gas, compressed air and other low-pressure fluids. Seamless steel pipes are generally used for pressure pipelines.

In terms of performance, seamless tubes are usually stronger and more durable than seamed tubes. This is because the absence of welds eliminates a potential weak point in the pipe and also allows for more uniform stress distribution throughout the pipe. Seamless pipe is also less prone to cracking or leaking, making it a popular choice for high-pressure applications or applications requiring a high degree of reliability.

Overall, while seamed pipes are less expensive and easier to manufacture than seamless pipes, they may not have the same level of strength, durability or corrosion resistance as seamless pipes. The choice between seamless and seamed pipe depends on the specific needs and requirements of the application, as well as budget and other factors.

What are the uses of seamless pipes?

Seamless tubes are used in a wide range of applications in many industries, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, power generation, aerospace, automotive, construction and more. The product is widely appreciated for its good internal and external surface quality, small fluctuation range of chemical composition, and high steel purity.

Some common uses for seamless pipe include:
Structural pipe: Implementation of GB/T8162 standard. Seamless steel tubes for general structure and mechanical structure.

Hydraulic pillar tube: Hydraulic pillar tube is mainly used for making hydraulic equipment used in coal mine opening, hydraulic cylinders and plungers used in automobile cranes, etc., of which seamless tubes for hydraulic pillars are in the greatest demand. Users require the hydraulic pillar tube has good safety and reliability of use. The hydraulic pillar tube produced by Tianjin Steel Pipe Company has a small fluctuation range of chemical composition, low content of harmful elements, high steel purity, good internal and external surface quality, high geometric dimensional accuracy, and stable performance. Meet the user’s requirements for safety and reliability of the use of hydraulic pillar tube.

Petroleum cracking pipe: GB9948 and ASME SA-213 standards are implemented, used as seamless steel pipes for furnace pipes, heat exchanger pipes and pipelines in petroleum and refinery plants.

High-pressure fertilizer pipe: GB6479 standard is implemented. Seamless steel tubes for high-pressure fertilizer equipment and pipelines.

Automobile half-shaft casing: Execute YB/T5035 standard. High-quality carbon structural steel and alloy structural steel hot-rolled seamless steel tubes for manufacturing automobile half-shaft casing and drive axle housing axle tubes.

Cylinder bushings: Used for cylinder sleeves.

Cylinder bushing: Used for hydraulic and pneumatic steel cylinder processing.

Axle tube: Structural tubes for bridge cases.

Geological drilling tube: Execute YB/T5052 standard for geological drilling.

Ship tube: Execute GB/T5312 standard, used in the manufacture of marine boilers, superheaters and pressure-resistant system pipes.

How do I know if my pipe is seamless?

You can determine if a pipe is seamless by examining the surface of the pipe. Here are a few steps to help you determine if your pipe is seamless:

Look for welds: The most obvious way to determine if a pipe is seamless is to look for welds. If there is a visible weld along the length of the pipe, then it is not seamless. This weld may be a straight line, or it may be a spiral on the surface of the pipe.

Check the surface for irregularities: Seamless pipe is usually smooth and uniform in appearance, with no surface irregularities or distortions. If you run your fingers along the surface of the pipe and feel any bumps, ridges or other irregularities, the pipe is probably not seamless.

Look for markings or labels: Many seamless pipes will have markings or labels on them that indicate that they are seamless. Look for labels that include the word “Seamless” or “SMLS” or markings that indicate the pipe’s specifications or manufacturing details.

Which is better: Seamed or seamless tubes?

The choice between seamed and seamless tubes depends on the specific needs and requirements of the application.
Weldability: There are some differences in the chemical composition of seamed and seamless pipe in general. The composition of the steel used to produce seamless pipe only meets the basic ASTM requirements. The steel used to produce seamed pipe contains chemical constituents suitable for welding. For example, silicon, sulfur, manganese, oxygen and a mixture of elements such as delta ferrite in certain proportions.

Strength: The strength of a pipe depends on the alloy composition, so seamless and seamed pipes containing the same alloy and the same heat treatment are essentially the same strength. In tensile and 3-D vibration tests, tears in seamed pipes almost always occur away from the weld or heat area. This is because the weld is less contaminated and has a slightly higher nitrogen content, resulting in better strength at the weld than at other locations.

Corrosion resistance: Corrosion resistance is also dependent on the composition of the alloy. Additional tests provided by ASTM prove that the corrosion resistance of the weld is equal to or better than that of the metal being welded. Corrosion of welds on incompletely heat-treated seamed pipe is accelerated in an acidic chloride environment, but this is only necessary for corrosion testing and is not as severe as the actual environment. Bendability and Elongation: Elongation of the weld can be verified by the following ASTM test: bend 45°, bend to 90°, and then flatten along the weld; then turn the seamed tube and repeat the steps to achieve a 180° inside diameter of the weld bend. The quality of the weld is passed with no tearing or intergranular separation allowed at 40 times magnification. The pipe bend radius is controlled by the alloy composition, with a minimum bend radius of 2D. The ideal welding conditions are when the weld is neutral or under pressure. Furthermore, the pipe should be annealed to reduce its hardness and thus improve bending properties.

Price: Seamed pipe is usually half the price of seamless pipe.

Wall thickness/diameter: Thin-walled pipes with small thickness/diameter values are best produced by welding. Thick-walled tubes with large thickness/diameter values are best made by stamping.

Overall quality: In general, seamed tubes are of better quality than seamless tubes because they are made from accurately inspected cold-rolled sheet, so that any defects are limited to the welds. Seamless tubes are made from stainless steel billets that are stamped with a punch, resulting in many tears in the walls of the tube that are formed by extrusion. Eddy current testing shows that the defect rate for seamed tubes is usually lower than that for seamless tubes. Using ultrasonic testing, the background noise of seamless tubes is so high that it is difficult to detect defects. Seamed tubes, on the other hand, have very low background noise, making it easy to find defects.
