Tip: Drilling holes in galvanized pipes can damage the galvanized layer, and the location of the holes will rust without coating protection. When you buy a pipe, try to have the manufacturing process it directly for you.
If you still want to drill a large diameter hole in galvanized steel pipe, you can use a smaller drill bit as a guide bit first, and then use the appropriate drill size for reaming, which will make the drilling more accurate.
When we need to drill holes in galvanized steel pipes, we may encounter drill bit slippage, which may lead to offset drilling position or drill bit damage, here are a few small ways to help you avoid slippage.
- Use a center drill bit to first make a small hole at the location where the hole needs to be drilled, and then use the drill bit to enlarge the hole. Avoid the drill bit from sliding on the surface.
- Apply a layer of soap or drilling fluid to the surface of the pipe to reduce friction.
- Most galvanized pipe is only mild steel, which is relatively soft and easy to drill. When you tap the metal, take your time and push hard to keep the drill bit in. Basically let the drill finish the job and don’t push too hard. Applying too much pressure will heat the drill bit and dull it faster. Allow the bit to cool some between holes, pulling it out of the hole every few seconds to remove chips and cool it down. Choosing a drill bit that is suitable for steel pipe can also reduce the risk of drill bit slippage. For example, choosing a cobalt steel drill bit will allow better drilling of hard metals.
