Difference Between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 Pipe

Table of Contents

When using metal pipes, it is necessary to understand the properties of outer diameter, wall thickness and inner diameter. However, many times the pipe is not directly indicated by these dimensions. Instead, the pipe is usually represented by its nominal size and meter number. Because pipe specifications are so common in the industry, it is crucial to understand how pipe specification systems work and the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80, the two most common pipe specifications.

The biggest differences between schedule 40 and schedule 80 tubing are wall thickness, inside diameter, and weight. Of course, all of these figures will vary depending on the nominal size of the pipe. In addition, there are many other pipe specification figures. Therefore, it is important to refer to the pipe specification sheet to ensure that the appropriate pipe specification is selected.

Wall thickness – Schedule 80 tubing has a thicker wall than Schedule 40 tubing for the same NPS. The increase in wall thickness makes Schedule 80 tubing stronger and able to withstand greater pressure and heavier loads.

Weight – The weight of Schedule 40 tubing depends on its length and material composition, but is lower than Schedule 80 tubing due to its thinner walls.

Pressure rating – Schedule 40 tubing has a lower pressure rating than Schedule 80 tubing due to the relatively thin wall. Schedule 80 tubing can withstand higher pressures and is often used in heavy duty applications.

Strength and durability – While Schedule 40 tubing is suitable for many general purpose applications, it may not be as effective as Schedule 80 tubing in handling extreme pressures or stresses. Schedule 80 tubing has increased wall thickness, resulting in greater strength and durability.

Both Schedule40 and Schedule80 tubes have their own unique application areas and advantages, and knowing their dimensions and weights allows professionals to choose the right tube for their specific needs.
